Concept Design (December 2020)

Collaborative design process

The concept design presented below ( Additional Materials ) has been developed through a collaborative design process with the local community since September 2019.

The information displayed during each stage of the project in addition to the design proposals displayed during the Explore the Designs stage were presented to and approved by the Project Delivery Group and Steering Group before being showcased to the wider community for feedback.

The concept design is focused on improving the pedestrianised zone of the High Street including Market Square, and the junction of Bridge Street and High Street including the two signalised pedestrian crossings.

The concept design endeavours to meet design objectives:

  • Improve the public realm to make the High Street a more attractive place to spend time in
  • Make the High Street safe and accessible for everyone, and prioritise people over vehicle movements
  • Celebrate Wick’s local history and identity
  • Improve the cohesiveness and connectivity of the Town Centre
  • What's next

With support from Sustrans, Highland Council and Councillor Nicola Sinclair’s, Wick Community Council have applied to Sustrans’ Places for Everyone programme for further funding to progress this concept design with the Highland Council to the final stages: 1) detailed and technical design, where more detail will be added, such as specific material choices and precise measurements; and 2) construction.
